Visibility is a test — and most websites fail it
Google does not rank websites out of goodwill. Every page goes through a silent validation: can it be crawled, is it fast, is it trustworthy, does it answer a real question better than the alternatives? Fail any of those checks and you slide into the pages nobody reads. The good news: every check can be diagnosed and fixed.
1. Google can't crawl your site
Broken internal links, misconfigured robots.txt files, and orphan pages mean the crawler never reaches your content. If Google can't read a page, that page effectively doesn't exist. A crawl audit is always our first step — it regularly uncovers whole sections of a site that were invisible for months.
2. Your pages are too slow
Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, but more importantly they are a user factor: slow pages get abandoned, and abandonment feeds back into rankings. Oversized images, unused scripts, and cheap hosting are the usual suspects.
3. Your content answers nobody
Pages written for keywords instead of people no longer work. Search engines now model intent — what the user actually wants to accomplish. Content that genuinely solves the searcher's problem consistently outranks content that merely repeats the search phrase.
4. No technical foundation
Missing structured data, broken canonical tags, duplicate titles, and no XML sitemap all send the same signal: this site is not maintained. Technical SEO is not glamorous, but it is the foundation everything else stands on.
5. Zero authority signals
Google validates trust through references — links from credible sites, consistent business information, real reviews. A site no one refers to is a site Google hesitates to recommend.
6. You ignore mobile users
Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your mobile experience is cramped, broken, or slow, your desktop excellence doesn't matter.
7. You never measure
Sites that rank are sites that are managed: someone watches Search Console, notices dropped pages, and reacts. Visibility is not a one-time achievement — it's an ongoing validation loop.
Pass the test
At Validator we run this exact validation across every client site — crawl, speed, intent, technical foundation, authority, mobile, and measurement — then fix the failures in priority order. If your site is invisible, it's not a mystery. It's a checklist.
