How Search Engines Work?

The three-stage machine

Every search engine — Google included — does three things: it discovers pages (crawling), stores and organizes them (indexing), and orders them by relevance and quality when someone searches (ranking). Each stage has its own rules, and your website has to pass all three.

Stage one: crawling

Automated bots follow links across the web, reading every page they can reach. Your job is to make their path easy: clean internal linking, a current XML sitemap, fast responses, and no accidental blocks in robots.txt. Pages a crawler can't reach never enter the game at all.

Stage two: indexing

Crawled pages get parsed and stored in a massive database — the index. Here the engine decides what your page is about, using titles, headings, content, and structured data. Duplicate content, thin pages, and conflicting signals cause pages to be indexed poorly or skipped entirely.

Stage three: ranking

When someone searches, the engine pulls candidate pages from its index and orders them using hundreds of signals: relevance to the query's intent, content quality, page experience, mobile usability, and the authority the site has earned through credible references.

What changed: answers, not just links

Modern search increasingly answers directly — featured snippets, AI Overviews, and conversational assistants. This makes structure matter more than ever: clear questions and answers, factual authority, and machine-readable data determine who gets quoted, not just who gets listed.
